Onyx is agate with plane-parallel layers of various colors usually white and black or black grey. Name comes from the Greek onyx (onychos) – nail.

In translation from the Arabic language “onyx” meant grief, sorrow. Species: onyx – agate with interchange of plane-parallel layers of various colours; according to the coloration of layers there distinguished: Arabic onyx (or onyx proper) – layers are black and white, carneolonyx – red and white; sardonyx – brownish black and white; chalcedononyx – grey and white; onyx agate – various tints of grey (this subkind is unique).
